French Polishing

An introduction to French Polishing and the techniques involved in restoring damaged furniture. Techniques to be learnt include: stripping/cleaning of original finish; staining, dyeing of timber; polishing; wax finish.

An introduction to the chemicals used in the polishing process, how to use them effectively and safely, and develop an understanding of the sequences of processes that give furniture a variety of different finished effects.

By the end of the course, students should be able to:
  • Understand the materials involved in the french polishing process
  • Understand and carry out the processes involved in preperation for french polishing
  • Understand and carry out the french polishing process
  • Appreciate the history of french polishing
  • Carry out work with regards health and safety
  • Complete an item of furniture using french polishing techniques
